Scan images using your Mac

You do not need any special software to scan an image if you have a scanner or a printer with a scanner.

You must first open your scanner before scanning. Then, for either a document-feeding scanner or a flatbed scanner, follow the instructions.

Notice that some of the options mentioned below might not be appropriate for your scanner. Refer to the manual that came with the software you’re using if these instructions vary from what you see onscreen.

  1. Turn on your scanner.
  2. Connect your scanner to your Mac’s USB port, plug it in, and power it up.
  3. Select Printers & Scanners from the Apple menu > Device Preferences.
  4. Select your scanner from the list on the left, then on the right, press Open Scanner.
  5. If your scanner also functions as a printer, you can need to first press Scan on the right before proceeding to Open Scanner.
  6. If you don’t see an Open Scanner button, you may need to set up your scanner or consult the manual that came with it to learn how to scan.

Use a document-feeding scanner to search

You can scan several pages at once using a scanner with an automated paper feeder. Many of the pages in the feeder have the same settings. Scan pages in groups if they need different settings (for example, some are greyscale and others are colour).

  1. Place the pages in the paper feeder of the scanner.
  2. Select Printers & Scanners from the Apple menu > Device Preferences.
  3. Select your scanner from the list on the left, then on the right, press Open Scanner.
  4. If your scanner also functions as a printer, you can need to first press Scan on the right before proceeding to Open Scanner.
  5. If you don’t see an Open Scanner button, you may need to set up your scanner or consult the manual that came with it to learn how to scan.
  6. Select Use Document Feeder from the drop-down menu.
  7. Configure the scanning options. To see all of the available choices, you can need to press Show Details. You can choose from the following options:
    1. Select the image form to be scanned: Use the pop-up menu for Kind.
    2. Choose Text for high-contrast black-and-white pictures, such as a document; Black & White for greyscale images; and Colour for colour images.
    3. Scanning all sides of a page is a good idea: Duplex is the option to choose.
    4. For the scanned object, select a size: Use the Size pop-up menu to adjust the size.
    5. Select a location to save the scanned items: Use the pop-up menu Scan To.
    6. If you select a folder, the things will be saved there. When you choose an app, the objects will be opened in that app.
    7. Adjust the scanned image’s colours or exposure: From the Image Correction pop-up menu, select Manual, then tweak the controls.
    8. If the image correction controls aren’t visible, scroll down or render the Scanner window taller.
    9. Select Scan.
    10. The scanner scans each page individually.

Use a flatbed scanner to scan your documents

You can scan several smaller images at once with a flatbed scanner, save each image in its own register, and straighten any images that were crooked on the scanner bed during scanning.

  1. Arrange the objects on the scanner’s table.
  2. Make sure there is enough room between each object on the scanner bed if you want to save each item in its own file. The scanner can import multiple scanned images if you scan an image with a lot of white space.
  7. If the option to use a document feeder is available, deselect it.
  8. From the Scan To pop-up menu, select a location to save the scanned objects.
  9. If you select a folder, the things will be saved there. When you choose an app, the objects will be opened in that app.
  10. From the Size pop-up menu, choose the size of the picture or document you’re scanning.
  11. You have the option of using a regular paper size or either of the following options:
    1. Detect Separate Images: Separate each object into its own file and straighten any objects that are crooked.
    2. Detect Enclosing Box: Combine all of the objects on the scanner bed into a single picture that is only large enough to fit them all. Objects that are crooked are not straightened.
  12. Select Scan.

The things on the scanner bed are determined by a preliminary scan. Each file that is generated is subjected to a second scan.

Set up a scanner to use with Mac

In the Printers & Scanners preferences, you can add a scanner to the list of equipment.

If you already have a printer with a scanner, you may be able to use its scanner features without doing any extra work. Click Scan after selecting the printer from the list on the left.

  1. Make sure macOS has the most recent scanner software before you start setting up your scanner. Choose Apple menu > About this Mac, then Software Updates on your Mac.
  2. You don’t need to look for software updates if you have a multifunction AirPrint printer and scanner.
  3. To unpack the scanner and attach it to your Mac, follow the instructions that came with it.
  4. Use a multiport adapter if your Mac only has one USB-C port and you want to add a USB scanner. Attach the scanner, then plug in a USB-C cable to a power supply to extend your Mac’s battery life.
  5. Important: Do not use the scanner’s included software. Your macOS machine will automatically download the most recent scanner programme.
  6. Select Printers & Scanners from the Apple menu > Device Preferences.
  7. If your scanner isn’t mentioned on the left, click the Add button to add it. Choose Add Printer or Scanner if a pop-up menu appears.
  8. Then press Add after selecting your scanner.
  9. If your scanner isn’t on the list, consult the manual that came with it to learn how to scan with it.

How To Scan A Document On Mac?

Given the technical advancements made by our computers, monitors, and smartphones over the last decade, it could appear that printers and, in particular, scanners, have fallen behind. Despite the addition of touchscreens and WiFi, they are still regarded as obscure, clunky gadgets tucked away in a corner of the office.

The good news is that if you have a Mac, you won’t have to learn anything new to search documents because macOS makes it virtually automatic and even gives you a few options. So, what’s the best way to search a document on a Mac? This guide will provide you with all of the knowledge you need.

The Best Ways To Scan On A Mac

When it comes to Mac scanner apps, you have two options: either download it (often automatically) when you instal your scanner, or use Mac’s default, but still excellent, Image Capture app.

First and foremost, let’s look at how to set up your Mac scanner:

  1. Make sure your scanner is plugged in and turned on.
  2. Go to Printers & Scanners in Device Preferences.
  3. If your scanner is visible, choose it from the sidebar’s chart. If you don’t have one, press the plus (+) icon below and choose a scanner from the drop-down menu.

Most scanner software for Mac will be installed automatically when you connect the scanner, so there’s no need to look for drivers online or try to instal them from a CD like we used to. You’re now set to scan on your Mac!

How to scan on Mac using a flatbed scanner?

Using the scanner’s flatbed is the simplest and most straightforward way to scan any document:

  1. Open the scanner’s top section.
  2. Place your paper face down on the glass and carefully align all of the sides.
  3. Pick the Scan tab in System Preferences Printers & Scanners, then Open Scanner…
  4. Wait for the scanner to warm up and show you a sample of the document before making any necessary adjustments.
  5. When you’re finished, click Scan.

You might be shocked by the number of options available. But don’t worry, the majority of them are excellent by default.

Make sure Flatbed is turned off in Scan Mode, for example. Select whether you want Color or Black and White in Kind. To avoid losing any data, aim for a resolution of about 300 dpi. Finally, choose the destination folder in Scan To and the extension you want for your scans in Format. JPGs are common, but PDFs are often preferable, particularly when scanning text documents.

  6. Scan is pressed.

Rather than settling for anything like HP scan programme for Mac if you don’t like Printers & Scanners’ default way of scanning on Mac, try Image Capture first.

  1. Image Capture is one of your Mac’s default utilities, but it’s often ignored. That’s too bad, because it’s easily the best Mac scanner software available, and it’s really easy to use:
  2. Open Image Capture from your Applications folder after your computer appears in Printers & Scanners.
  3. You’ll see a preview of your file right away, and you’ll be able to choose the destination folder and size.
  4. If you need to change more settings, select Show Details, which will open the same menu as Printers & Scanners.
  5. Adjust all of the settings, including whether or not to use the document feeder, and then press Scan.
  6. The best Mac scan utility is image capture.
