Scanning Documents to a Computer Connected with USB Cable

This section explains how to scan documents to your computer using a USB cable directly attached to it. Make certain the scanner driver is up to date.

Scanning with the machine’s [Start] button

Using the machine’s operation panel, you can scan documents and send the scanned data to your computer.

REMEMBER

Make that the scanner is linked to your computer through USB and that the USB scanner driver is installed.

1. Arrange the documents.

2. Select USB SCANNING> by repeatedly pressing [SCAN].

3. Press the [Start] button.

  • If you’re prompted to choose a programme to run, choose “MF Toolbox Ver4.9.” Your settings will determine how the scanned document is processed.

When the scanning is finished, a folder in the [My Pictures] folder in the [My Documents] folder will be created with the scanning date, and your document will be saved in this folder.

(The folder will be created in the [Pictures] folder on Windows Vista.)

Using the MF Toolbox to scan

Using the buttons on the MF Toolbox, you can scan a document.

1. Arrange the documents.

2. To access the MF Toolbox, double-click the [Canon MF Toolbox 4.9] icon on the Windows desktop.

3. Select a scanning option from the drop-down menu.

  • [Mail]: Your e-mail application will scan the document and attach it to an e-mail message.
  • [OCR]: The OCR programme will scan and read the text.
  • [Save]: The document will be saved after it has been scanned.
  • The text will be scanned and saved as a PDF document.
  • The text will be scanned and presented in the registered application [Scan-1], [Scan-2].
  • You can modify the name of the button by typing a new name (up to 8 characters long) immediately over the existing one.
  • For each of the buttons, a dialogue window displays.
  • For instance, the [Mail] dialogue box.

4. Make the necessary adjustments.

Before clicking [Start], click [Apply] to save the current settings for future scans.

REMEMBER

You can configure the different settings for each with the [Scan-1] and [Scan-2] buttons. If you click [Apply] to save the settings, they will take effect the next time you log in.

5. Press the [Start] button.

  • The [ScanGear MF] dialogue box will display if you select [Display the Scanner Driver] in step 4.

6. Make the necessary adjustments.

7. Select [Scan] from the drop-down menu.

  • When the scanning is finished, a folder in the [My Pictures] folder in the [My Documents] folder will be created with the scanning date, and your document will be saved in this folder.
  • (The folder will be created in the [Pictures] folder on Windows Vista.)
  • The scanned image will be displayed in the application or attached to an email message if you have applications registered to the [Mail], [OCR], [PDF], [Scan-1], or [Scan-2] buttons.
  • For some models, the machine’s CD-ROM includes the apps listed below, which can be utilised with the MF Toolbox. At the time of installation, they will be registered in the MF Toolbox buttons.
  1. ScanSoft OmniPage SE (OCR)
  2. – Presto! PageManager (PDF)

REMEMBER

Presto! with ScanSoft OmniPage PageManager is not compatible with Windows XP 64-bit.

Using an Application to Scanning an Image

You can scan a picture from a TWAIN- or WIA-compliant application (Windows XP/Vista Only) and use it in that programme. The process is demonstrated in the following example.

1. Arrange the documents.

2. Launch the programme you want to utilise.

3. Select the scan command.

4. Choose the scanner driver you want to use.

  • You can use the ScanGear MF or the WIA driver as the scanner driver with Windows XP/Vista.

5. Set the scanner’s parameters and then click [Scan].
