What made you choose to go into computer programming? What are you doing with your degree now?

I was fascinated by computers and video games growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After graduating high school in 1986, it became clear that computers played an increasing role in every business. I switched majors during college and decided to try programming. I found that I loved the challenge of solving business problems using software solutions and that programming was a great career choice. This has been the case for over 25 years. Programming is something I enjoy and the puzzle-solving aspect of my job is still my favorite aspect.

This will help them not only gain valuable skills but also make a decision about a career path. Students should also look for schools that emphasize internships and/or co-ops. This will allow them to interact with real professionals and get out into the real world. It was both fun and exciting for me to be a college co-op. I gained a lot from the professionals I worked alongside and was eventually offered a full-time job with that company.

Careers in general IT and, of course, software development/programming jobs. It doesn’t matter what career you are in, the mindset and skills required to be a programmer will help anyone. It is important to be able to concentrate on solving problems, think through the logic, and then implement it.

How do your students find work after they have completed their bachelor’s degree in computer programming?

My students at Cincinnati State only earn an associate degree or certificate. However, many transfer to other colleges to pursue a bachelor’s degree. I encourage them to do this. Students who do well and gain experience through co-op and internships are highly sought after and can be hired quickly.
